I was born January 18, 1946, in Brisbane, Australia. My mother, a native Australian, married my father, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army in World War II, in 1945.  I graduated in June 1964 from Washington Irving High School, Clarksburg, WV.  In September 1964, I entered West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, WV,  In August 1966, I transferred to Salem College, Clarksburg Campus, on a part-time basis, and worked full-time as a disk jockey at WBOY Radio and a studio technician  for WBOY TV from November 1966 until May 1967 (to earn tuition money).  In August 1967, I transferred to West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV, as a full-time student, majoring in speech and minoring in journalism during the first semester.  For the second semester and the duration of my studies at WVU, I changed my major to journalism and my minors to speech and political science. In August 1969, I received a Bachelor of Science in Journalism degree from WVU.  From April 1970 until March 1971, I was assistant program director for WHIS AM/FM/TV stations in Bluefield, WV, and did some limited on-air reporting on both radio and Channel 6 TV. From March 1971 until October 1972, I served as state editor for the Parkersburg Sentinel newspaper in Parkersburg, WV. For five weeks in August-September 1974, I worked in news and advertising for the Grafton Daily Sentinel newspaper, Grafton, WV.  In September 1974, I was employed by The Clarksburg Exponent as city editor, a position I held until December 1976. In that month, I transferred to a similar position with the Clarksburg Telegram, until I was named editor of that newspaper after my predecessor walked off his job in June 1984. In January 1997, I was named editor of the combined Clarksburg Exponent and Telegram, a position I held until I took early retirement in January 2009.

I have been married to the former Nadine L. Criss since October 1990, but I have three sons from a previous marriage: Robert F. Stealey II, Charlotte, N.C., age 42, Bryan T. Stealey, Morgantown, WV, age 40, and Dr. Clinton M. Stealey, Powell, Ohio, age 37. I have two stepchildren, Joanie Callihan Oliverio of Lost Creek, WV, and Todd Callihan of Good Hope, WV.

My main hobbies include writing fiction; occasionally researching popular music history from Billboard magazine, and following the baseball and football seasons of professional and college teams.

In 1992, I received from the U.S. Small Business Administration, in West Virginia, the top media award.  In 1997, I was awarded by the West Virginia Press Association the best written editorial in my newspaper's circulation division.  In 1975 or 1976, I received a Best Internal Project award by the Clarksburg Jaycees for my extensive publicity work to promote our chapter.

Bob-n-Along: The price of gas and some random things I've been thinking about recently

Every now and then I find it a worthwhile endeavor to just stop whatever I happen to be doing long enough to make note of the present state of things as I see them. Naturally, you and I may see things as different, but no problem. It wou...

Bob-n-Along: Another walk down memory lane in downtown Clarksburg

It has been a while since we last took a trip down memory lane in downtown Clarksburg. A few months ago, I wrote about the stores and businesses that lined West Pike Street, but today, I'd like to list some of the places that were si...

Bob-n-Along: To know or not to know the future - that is the question!

Most likely if I were a TV weatherman, on this day I'd be calling for a 100 percent chance of a 30-day April ahead, and I'd have no fear of being contradicted. But what will April bring for us? The month of March was such an enig...

Bob-n-Along: 1977 was a really big year for some really big hits in the music world

This week I thought we'd go with another "Big Year in Pop/Rock Music" theme, and the year I've chosen this time is 1977. There were several big hits on the charts in 1977, so without further ado, let's get started....

Bob-n-Along: Happy St. Patrick's Day and My Thoughts on Downtown Revitalization

Today I'll begin with a hearty greeting to you for a most jolly St. Patrick's Day and my best wishes to one and all, whether Irish or not, for a most prosperous and successful remainder of 2017. Thank goodness spring is only thre...

Bob-n-Along: Thoughts on repealing and replacing Obamacare: the Affordable Care Act

There has been quite a lot of talk lately about Obamacare, or, as the creators of it have preferred to call it, the Affordable Care Act (ACT). From all the information I've been hearing about it, since it became an actual system of medica...

Bob-n-Along: Elks Lodge Returns to Harrison County Area; Officers Elected for 2017-18

Today's Bob'n'Along deals, at least partially, with the return to the Clarksburg area of a fine tradition that was in hiatus for a couple of years.   Now I should state here at the outset that despite any gossip that...

Bob-n-Along: Lovin' this weather and waitin' for March Madness to begin!

Well, I need to ask you--to do it in a way that I'm not "jinxing" things--whether you have really enjoyed how Ol' Man Winter has been treating us here in the Clarksburg area so far? If you were to ask me, I'd have to say...

Bob-n-Along: My thoughts on the New England Patriots' win and Hillary' Clinton's loss

Often when I'm looking for the definition of a word or of an expression, the dictionary is the logical destination to find the answer. But not always. Let's take a definition for the word "momentum," for example. A splen...

Bob-n-Along: Are you ready for some football? I'm cheering for the Atlanta Falcons!

Many times in this column I attempt to keep my subject matter as up to date as I can, that is, I seek to bring current events into my text. In today's instance, with little doubt the most dominant activity that I could point to would...
