Smith Joins Nick Casey, Gayle Manchin & Woody Thrasher on Governor's "You're Fired List"

By Connect Clarksburg Staff | March 13, 2019

Tom Smith, the Secretary for the WV Department of Transportation, was the latest high-ranking official in the Jim Justice administration to hear the Governor say "You're Fired!".  The Governor announced this past Sunday that Smith was no longer needed.

Smith joins a growing list of cabinet officials that Justice has sent on their way and out of the Capitol.  Nick Casey, the Governor's former Chief of Staff, was the first to get the ax. Right after the Governor switched from Democrat to Republican rumors began to circuluate that Casey, a former chairman of the WV State Democrat Party, would leave.  The Governor waited until Casey and his wife were celebrating their anniversary in New York to break the news to Casey.  Happy anniversary.

Gayle Manchin, wife to U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, was the next to get the phone call to go home.  She was serving as the Secretary of Education and The Arts.

Then it was former Commerce Secretary Woody Thrasher's turn.  Thrasher was widley popular in the business circles, and even the labor unions seemed to like the self-made engineer who left a firm of 500+ employees to join the Justice Administration. Thrasher made a name for himself nationally when he  worked with the Trump administration to negotiate an $83 billion agreement with China.  Most will remember that photo of Thrasher and Trump seated at the table with China's President and China Energy officials.

This week, it was Tom Smith -- the guy who worked his tail off to promote Justice's billion-dollar road bond amendment.  Smith travelled the state encouraging voters to support the measure which passed 4 to 1.
