Wilson Currey, Longtime Educator, Principal and School Board Member Dies at 88

Wilson W. Currey died January 3, 2019. He was born on June 3,1930 in Shinnston, WV and reared on the banks of the West Fork River.
 
Wilson was the son of the late Ralph B .and Thelma J. Currey who were long term residents of Shinnston.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jean Garton Currey, his son Ralph Brooks Currey, and daughter, Julia Currey Yao. His three priceless grandchildren, Christopher, Lauren and Sara, living in California, Florida and Kansas call him Grampums.
 
Wilson attended and graduated from Shinnston High School, Fairmont State College and West Virginia University. Before attending Fairmont State, he served in the United States Marine Corp.
 
Mr. Currey had a long and fruitful career in secondary public education, including position of Principal at Wyatt, Sardis, Roosevelt Wilson and Liberty Schools.

He continued his public education service as an elected member of the Harrison County Board of Education.
 
He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Shinnston including service as Trustee, Choir member and Sunday School Teacher.
 
Wilson had an active, healthy life the majority of his 88 years with frequent workouts at the YMCA with his long term workout partners, known as the “Breakfast Club”.
 
He was known to hold a Sunday coffee social before church with longtime friends at the McDonald’s in Shinnston.
 
As an avid reader and well versed scholar of military history and political science; he had a passion for in-depth study of past and current events.
 
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, beloved father and an influential mentor to his many students, staff members and friends.
 
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2019 from 1:00PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at
Harmer Funeral Home, 300 Pike St., Shinnston. Funeral services will be held on Monday January 7, 2019 at 1:00 PM with Rev. George Bramble and Pastor Kevin Nuzum officiating.
 
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Wilson’s name to the
Harrison County Humane Society, 2450 Saltwell Road, Shinnston, WV 26431
