Columbian Club Selects Isabella Bovino to Attend Girls State; Others Selected in County

In 2018 The Clarksburg Columbian Club is proud to sponsor five local high school students to participate as citizens of Rhododendron Girls State or Mountaineer Boys State. 
 
Sponsored nationally by the American Legion, these weeklong summer camps prepare the leaders of tomorrow by providing them with the opportunity to actively participate in our democratic system.
 
In order to qualify, a young man or woman must be an incoming senior, maintain a high GPA (2.75 or higher), be an exemplary citizen of his/her school and be recommended by the faculty of their respective school.
 
Students elected by The Clarksburg Columbian Club to attend Rhododendron Girls State June 10-16 at Davis Elkins College are as follows:
 
Anna Casto is the daughter of Antoinette and Christopher Casto. She is excited to have been selected and hopes to excel in all endeavors and challenges she undertakes at Rhododendron Girls State.
 
Casto is a junior at Bridgeport High School. She is an active member of the Key Club, the Student Council and, all the while, trains to play on the soccer team. Since she loves to help people and aspires to be a physician, Anna serves as a volunteer at United Hospital Center.
 
In a desire to learn more about the diversity of medicine, she has taken the opportunity to shadow various physicians in a variety of medical fields.
 
She learned her work ethic from an early age in her family’s business, the Ellis Restaurant and Sunset Drive-In. She loves to learn and tries to be continuously exposed to as many opportunities as possible in order to constantly enhance her knowledge.
 
Anna practices the Catholic faith and is a member of St Ann’s Catholic Church in Shinnston. She offers a helping hand where needed.
 
Casto is the granddaughter of Anthony and Carolyn Sue Ellis of Shinnston and Richard and the late Mary Louise Casto of St. Mary’s, GA.
 
Eleanor V. Noone is the daughter of Diana and Greg Noone of Bridgeport. She is a junior at Bridgeport High School and is ranked number two in her class with above a 4.0 GPA. Noone is a National Honor Society member, a member of the Société Honoraire de Français (The French National Honor Society), and the French Club. She is also A BHS Key Club Member.
 
A three-time varsity letterman in tennis, Eleanor has advanced to WV State Tournament semi-finals twice. This year she served as co-captain.
 
Eleanor teaches sailing to handicapped individuals at Sail Cape Cod. She teaches catechism at All Saints Catholic Church and delivers meals on Thanksgiving. For the last two years, she has co-chaired the UNICEF Trick or Treat Committee and has assisted with the Shop-4 Tots program.
 
She is the granddaughter of Virginia and Gino Colombo of Clarksburg and Virginia and Dick Noone of Brockton, Massachusetts.
 
Madelyn G. Lalama, daughter of Marcello and Ursula Lalama, is a Junior at Bridgeport High School. She will be inducted into the National Honor Society this fall and she is a member of the Bridgeport High School Key Club.
 
She is a member of the DECA Leadership Team, an organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs to be college and career ready. In Charleston, she recently competed in DECA’s state competition and qualified for the organization’s international competition in Atlanta, Ga.
 
She is a member of the Bridgeport High School Key Club and she enjoys being involved with the community. Madelyn recently helped with landscaping at a sober living home in Clarksburg and she is a lifeguard at Oral Lake in Bridgeport.
 
Madelyn is the granddaughter of Jack Baldini and Sue Baldini of Bridgeport and Anna and the late Antonio Lalama of Boardman, Ohio.
 
Isabella G. Bovino, daughter of Brandy Straface and Stephen Bovino of Clarksburg, is a junior at Robert C. Byrd High School. She is a member of the Student Council, Key Club and Interact Club.
 
Isabella was a member of the volleyball team for two years and is a three-year member of the track and field team. Her shuttle hurdle relay team recently participated in the WV State Track Meet in Charleston, where they set a school record. She takes AP and college courses and has received multiple awards for academic excellence.
 
Isabella has volunteered for FRMC Employee Association events and recently donated her time to an event in preparation for Relay for Life. She is a member of the Immaculate Conception Church.
 
She is the granddaughter of Mary Straface and the late Russell Straface of Clarksburg, and Rita and Steve Bovino of Greensburg, Pa.
