Senator Capito Appointed to Energy and Natural Resources Committee in the U.S. Senate

By Connect Clarksburg Staff | January 15, 2018
U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today announced she will serve on the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources (ENR) Committee for the remainder of the 115th Congress. She will also continue to serve on the U.S. Senate Committees on Appropriations; Environment and Public Works (EPW); Commerce, Science, & Transportation; and Rules and Administration.

“I am thrilled to rejoin the Energy and Natural Resources Committee,” Senator Capito said. “West Virginia is a state rich in resources that power our nation’s homes, schools, small businesses, and hospitals. This committee assignment guarantees West Virginians a seat at the table when it comes to shaping policy related to energy resources and development. I look forward to working with both Republican and Democrat committee members to develop smart energy policy and advance projects like the Appalachian ethane storage hub that I have championed. A regional storage hub would have a tremendous and positive economic impact on Appalachian states, and I will continue to advocate for it and other critical West Virginia priorities as a member of the ENR Committee.”

More information on all of Senator Capito’s committee assignments is below.

U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources
As a member of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (ENR), Senator Capito will oversee legislative activity pertaining to energy resources and development. This includes regulation, conservation, public lands and their renewable resources, surface mining, coal, oil and gas, water resources, and other issues of importance to energy producing states like West Virginia.

U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations
As a member of the Appropriations Committee, Senator Capito works to ensure West Virginia’s priorities are considered when our nation’s funding decisions are determined. As chairman of the Appropriations Committee’s Legislative Branch Subcommittee during the 114th Congress, Senator Capito led the subcommittee responsible for funding the Congress and Capitol complex. For the past two years, she was the only freshman senator to chair an Appropriations subcommittee in the 114th Congress, putting her in a strong position to advocate for West Virginia. She currently serves as chairman of the Financial Services and General Government subcommittee.

U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works
As a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW), Senator Capito advocates for policies that protect vital West Virginia energy and manufacturing jobs and encourage investment in West Virginia’s highway infrastructure. The EPW Committee has primary jurisdiction over Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations that have targeted West Virginia energy production. As a leader on the EPW Committee, Senator Capito is committed to reining in overreaching EPA regulations and protecting affordable, reliable energy. She currently serves as chairman of EPW’s Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee.

U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation
The Commerce Committee has some of the broadest jurisdiction in the Senate and oversees many issues that are critical to West Virginia, most notably broadband. The committee oversees both the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). This committee assignment allows Senator Capito to continue advocating for improved broadband access in West Virginia.

U.S. Senate Committee on Rules and Administration
The Committee on Rules and Administration oversees the internal management of the Senate and legislative branch agencies, including the Library of Congress, and is responsible for legislation establishing federal election laws.
